Matters of the Heart
Your feet can often point the way to concerns going on in different parts of your body. If you know what to look for you can identify signs of heart disease manifesting below your knees.
Cardiovascular disease often leads to Peripheral Arterial Disease or PAD, a loss of circulation to the feet. Changes to your feet including, color changes, skin changes, stabbing or aching pain, slow healing wounds and loss of hair on the toes and other areas. Multiple causes can manifest with these symptoms so it is best to have a podiatrist diagnose your condition. If PAD is determined to be the heart of the matter then your podiatrist will work with you and your medical team to determine the best course of treatment. Multiple treatment options are available including medication and changes to diet, exercise and other lifestyle changes.
The earlier PAD is diagnosed, the more likely it is that treatment will be effective. If you experience discomfort, or if you notice any other changes to the appearance of your feet, you should see your podiatrist as soon as possible.
