Orthotics or Arch Supports?
Are those shoe inserts you can buy in the drug store or supermarket really orthotics? Not really. They are arch supports, and even there they can’t be designed to work perfectly for every type of foot. Orthotics, as opposed to arch supports, are not designed just to lend support under the foot but to redistribute wright bearing force to the appropriate part of the foot or correct an abnormal foot motion. Since your feet are unique, in most cases a custom orthotic must be created that takes the bio-mechanics of your feet into consideration. Well designed orthotics will provide relief for uncomfortable feet that have been stressed by improper weight bearing or motion.
It’s important to find out why your feet hurt. Following diagnosis, it’s then time to formulate a treatment plan which may consist of custom designed orthotics, medications, surgery, or even a change in foot wear. Many foot problems evolve over time from improper shoes, age, slow-growing medical conditions, physical stress, and muscular imbalance. If your feet hurt, now is the time to communicate with your doctor.
