Thanksgiving
There are many important reasons to be thankful for your feet. This holiday season we will take a moment to share those reasons and discuss how we can show our appreciation!
They support us. Not only do our feet support our entire body weight, all however many pounds of us. It is estimated that while walking and more so when running our the force on our feet is multiplied up to three times our body weight. Our arches help to distribute this weight and play an important role in foot support.
And it's not just our arches at work. The feet are complex structures made up of 26 bones, 33 joints, more than 100 muscles, tendons and ligaments, and around 8000 nerves. In fact there are more nerve endings per square inch than any other part of your body. Keeping all of these body parts working together plays an important role in our foot health.
Not only do they function together to support us, feet can also tell us more about our overall health. Our feet can bring attention to other health matters happening in the body including diabetes and neuropathy.
We can show our thanks to our feet as we do with so many other things we are thankful for, by taking care of them:
Proper grooming habits go a long way, be sure to wash, moisturize and keep nails trimmed.
Exercise helps to strengthen our feet to keep them healthy as does maintaining a healthy diet.
Custom orthotics and other insoles can relieve some of the burden we put on our feet.
Listening to our feet.
